Geraint Jones batted for nearly three hours on the final day to help Kent to a rain-affected draw at Somerset on Friday.

Jones (pictured) scored 47 from 150 balls before he was dismissed nine balls before the scheduled close at Taunton in the LV= County Championship Division 1.

A result looked unlikely after rain wiped out the third day’s play but Kent collapsed from 67-0 to 134-5 to give the hosts hope of claiming victory with more than 20 overs left in the day.

Kent held the upper hand after the opening day as Darren Stevens (4-38) checked a bright Somerset start and helped reduce them to 118-7. But 44 from Zander de Bruyn helped Somerset recover to 205 on day two.

Kent’s reply showed similar early promise but Joe Denly’s 34 proved to be the top score and they collapsed from 76-1 to 172.

Somerset had fewer problems second time around, racing to 301-7 in 54 overs before declaring.

Marcus Trescothick scored 80 from 101 balls while all of the Kent attack came in for some punishment with Matt Coles the most successful bowler, taking 3-73 in 13 overs.

Makeshift opener Sam Northeast (40) posted his second decent score of the game as Kent looked to be cruising to a draw in reply but a flurry of wickets meant James Tredwell and then Coles had to occupy the crease with Jones to help save them from defeat as they reached 191-7.
