DETECTIVES have renewed their appeal for information after a lorry driver was kidnapped and had his truck hijacked after he was flagged down by bogus police officers.

He was bundled into a waiting car and driven off. His lorry, containing red and white wine, was then stolen.

The drama unfolded on the A2070 Bad Munstereifel Road, Ashford, between 11am and noon on May 21, as the driver, who has not been named, made his way towards junction 10 of the M20.

It is believed he had just arrived in the country after travelling from France. The red and white Volvo articulated lorry, with the name Unitruc on the side, was pulled over just before the entrance to the Ashford Business Park by a blue Vauxhall Astra with a blue light on the roof.

Two men wearing yellow reflective jackets approached the driver and he was forced in to the Astra and the car sped off.

He was released by the captors several hours later and more than 50 miles away in Erith.

Police believe the stolen lorry, which was found abandoned in a lay-by in London Road, Wrotham, was dumped in the evening of the same day. It was empty.

Police spokesman Rosy Alexander said: "We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the vehicle being pulled over by these bogus policemen. Did you see this red and white lorry being left in the lay-by at Wrotham or being driven away?"

Anyone with information is urged to call DC Mark Gibson at Ashford police station on 01233 619188 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
