Free parking - but only in one car park for three months

Shoppers will be able to park for free in one part of Margate this summer, following a U-turn on car parking charges by Thanet council.

A three month trial will allow motorists to use the Mill Lane multi-storey for up to three hours on Saturdays without charge.

The decision follows discussions with high street traders, some of whom claim that increased competition from Westwood Cross and a jump in car park charges have had an effect on their business.

Cllr Martin Wise, cabinet member for finance, improvement and customer services, said: “We know that the area has a lot to offer and that free parking is a draw for motorists.

“This trial period should provide plenty of opportunity for people to visit Margate this summer.”

There was widespread condemnation of a decision earlier this year to increase parking prices by up to 16 per cent.

The typical cost of parking in Thanet town centres for two hours rose from £1 to £1.30 when this year’s budget was revealed.

The move is set to generate more than £200,000 for the council, which has been forced to address a £1million funding shortfall.

Cllr Richard Nicholson, leader of the Thanet Labour group, expressed some concern that the pilot scheme is being limited to a single town centre.

He said: “Whilst I welcome anything that encourages shopping in Margate, this step will do nothing to help other places like Cliftonville, Broadstairs and Ramsgate which are also feeling the pinch.

“This seems to be one way to increase trade and tourism, but I’m concerned it hasn’t been thought through properly.”

Councillors say that if the trial, which runs from July 5 until September 27, is successful, they will meet to discuss whether similar initiatives can be rolled out in other parts of Thanet.
