A former mayor of Tunbridge Wells has lost his old medals after burglars ransacked his Iden Green home.

David Kirby was Mayor of Tunbridge Wells between 1987 and 1988, but can no longer look back on medals commemorating the year in office, after they were taken from his home near Cranbrook by thieves on Sunday, January 24.

The medals - one on a blue ribbon and the other on a chain - show the coat of arms.

Also taken were an MBE awarded to Mr Kirby, an engraved Tissot watch and a station style oak clock with the word ‘Crowborough’ on the face.

Det Con Graham Norman said: "The items taken are of great sentimental importance rather than high monetary value and of little use to anyone else. If anyone knows the whereabouts of the medals or is able to provide information about the incident I would be pleased to hear from them."

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police on 01732 379217 (if possible quoting reference 1206) or Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Callers to Crimestoppers do not have to leave their name. Information can also be emailed to appeals.westkent@kent.pnn.police.uk
