Former Kent footballer Roy Hodgson is new England manager

Former Kent footballer Roy Hodgson has been confirmed as the new England manager.

He will leave his position as West Bromwich Albion boss to take charge of the national side on a four-year deal, the Football Association announced this afternoon.

The appointment scales a dramatic rise in football for the 64-year-old, who spent seven years as a player in Kent.

He spent time at Gravesend and Northfleet, Tonbridge Angels, Ashford Town and Maidstone United.

Hodgson played 59 times for Gravesend and Northfleet, from 1969-71 - scoring one goal.

Club director Jessica McQueen said if he is given the reins it would represent an amazing achievement for him and the football club.

She said: "From a club perspective we are immensly proud that someone who has graced the field at Stonebridge Road and played under the Gravesend and Northfleet badge has had a career that has hit these heights."

Hodgson went on to manage Switzerland, Juventus, Blackburn, Inter Milan, the United Arab Emirates, Finland, Fulham and Liverpool before taking on his current job at West Brom.

His first game in charge of England will be a friendly in Norway later this month, which comes before a Wembley contest against Belgium - and then Euro 2012.
