Motorists are being asked to avoid the Medway Tunnel after a five-vehicle smash this morning.

The emergency services were called to the scene at 8.50am following the accident on the Gillingham-bound carriageway.

Only one lane is closed so traffic can get past, but long queues have formed on the approach to the tunnel.

Stationary traffic is stacked up back to the Four Elms roundabout. Delays are estimated to be about 20 minutes.

A Kent Police spokesman said delays were likely to continue as all five vehicles need to be recovered.

No-one is thought to have suffered serious injuries.
