POLICE are investigating an explosion which shook nearby houses and destroyed three cars, causing at least £50,000 of damage.

Terrified residents thought a bomb had gone off in Flaxmans Court, Brompton, on Saturday night when a loud bang shook windows.

Police say the blast was caused by a “professional” firework.

People who left their homes to investigate discovered three cars ablaze near the Esmonde House retirement home.

Ann Spooner, whose flat overlooks the scene of the blast, said she was shocked and scared.

She said: “I was watching the snooker when I heard a tremendous bang and the house shook. I looked outside and the cars were burning. There were flames everywhere. I was terrified.”
