Festival brings Ramsgate history to life

There will be no chance to get bored in Ramsgate between July 27 and August 3 as there is a packed programme of free events at a major town festival with a Napoleonic theme.

Bygone Days Historical Group is staging Ramsgate Historical Festival which they plan to make an annual event.

There will be entertainment and events throughout the town where costumed characters will be cropping up.

The action starts on Monday, July 28. Government Acre will be the site of a funfair with displays involving local groups, a climbing wall, flight simulator and on Wednesday falconry demonstrations.

A highlight on Saturday August 2 will be when the Connaught Rangers put on a Napoleonic Re-enactment there from 11am-10pm and on Sunday, August 3, from 10am-6pm.

A Napoleonic battle of the bands will take place daily at the Eastcliff Bandstand from Monday, July 28, until Friday, August 1, from 3-7pm. Interested local bands interested can call Jo on 07877497711.

On Monday, July 28, a Teddy bears picnic will take place from 1-4pm at Albion Gardens, organised by the Play and Learn Scheme group (PALS), with facepainting and refreshments.

A craft and psychic fair will be at Charlotte Square from Monday, July 28, to Saturday, August 2, from 10am-4pm.

A costumed walk will leave Government Acre at 7pm on Tuesday, July 29, with storytelling at locations around the town.

There will be talks and educational activities at the Granville Theatre throughout the week with workshops on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The Story of Ramsgate will be told at the theatre on Saturday, August 2. For more details, contact the Granville on 01843 591750.

Artist Denys Le Fevre will exhibit at the Westcliff boating pool from Saturday, July 25 to Saturday, August 9 as part of the celebration.

Street entertainers will amuse town centre shoppers from Monday, July 28 to Thursday, July 31 when there will be a giant chess game from 12.30-3.30pm.
