Fatal smash closes M2

A man in his 50s has been killed in a motorway pile-up.

Three cars were involved in the crash on the M2 coastbound between Gillingham and Sittingbourne.

The accident happened at around 3.30am and the emergency services closed off the carriageway.

A motorist, who was caught up in the delays caused by the crash, said: "I drove past the crash site, which is about half-a-mile away from the Farthing Corner services.

"It looked really bad, one of the cars was completely mangled, unrecognisable."

The road was expected to remain shut until mid-morning.

The vehicles involved in the accident were a VW Golf, a VW Bora and a Peugeot 405.

A man aged 29 has been arrested and is helping police with their enquiries.
