The Day of Syn in Dymchurch based on Russell Thorndike’s novels will be held over August Bank Holiday weekend.

Visitors will be able to watch Dr Syn the Scarecrow and smugglers try to outwit their enemies, the Revenue men and soldiers, in the spectacular event which is held every other year.

This year the Day of Syn is dedicated to two Dymchurch residents, the late Alan Jones who researched the history, and Len Phelps, the treasurer.

Timetable for the weekendSaturday, 7.30pm: Author and historian Geoff Hutchinson will give an amusing talk, entitled 1066 to the Internet, at St Peter and St Paul’s Church.

Sunday 11am: Living history encampment, complete with Napoleonic soldiers, and the Golden Age of Piracy at the recreation ground in St Mary’s Road.

2.45pm: The squire and his lady in their carriage, followed by pirates and soldiers, will parade to St Peter and St Paul’s Church for evensong.

Bank Holiday Monday 10am: See some of the characters in the Dr Syn novels at the Ship Hotel

11am: Watch Dr Syn the Scarecrow and smugglers battle the Revenue men and soldiers at at the central slipway and beach

12.30pm: Soldiers will attempt to capture the Scarecrow and put him on trial, but will he survive to fight another day? A new twist to the executions will be revealed at the Ocean Inn car park

1.30pm: Parade to the recreation ground starting at the Ship Hotel

2.30 - 4.30pm: Owls from the Tomar Sanctuary, face painting, carriage rides and vintage vehicles will be among the attractions at the recreation ground
