SANTA abandoned Rudolph and his sleigh for a hot air balloon when he arrived at Dickens World in Chatham.

Landing on the roof, he then displayed remarkable agility by abseiling to the ground before taking up his position in the grotto.

Santa was given a welcome to put a sparkle in his eyes when he was met by finalists in a pan European beauty contest, together with the cast of Dickens characters.

Celebrity comedian David Baddiel was even there to see Santa arrive in unusual style.

People who came along to watch were given free access to Dickens World. They were also treated to a Christmas concert by a choir from Bexley and a whimsical version of A Christmas Carol, performed by staff.

Mince pies and mulled wine were also provided to generate Christmas spirit.

Santa will remain in his grotto until Christmas Eve, and will be handing out gifts to children whose parents stump up the necessary £4.

Dickens World is also staging the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk which will run from December 17 until January 6

Friday’s Medway Messenger will publish more pictures.
