Striker Loick Pires has revealed the secret behind Welling United’s goalscoring attack.

The Wings’ trio of forwards – Andy Pugh, Luis Cumbers and Pires - have been holding additional training sessions on Fridays throughout the campaign in a bid to maintain their sharpness.

It has certainly worked as the Wings have bagged 74 league goals already in Blue Square Bet South.

Pugh and Cumbers departed Gillingham last summer while Pires left League 1 Leyton Orient. All three dropped into the part-time game but have managed to work their schedules so they can put in extra sessions when possible.

“We’ve been doing extra finishing on a Friday and getting our co-ordination together (as a strikeforce),” said Pires.

“It’s hard to do it at training during the week so it has been nice to get some time work on our shooting, and also our fitness on the side as well.

“Obviously coming out of full-time football, we’re still trying to train as much as possible, be as professional as we can and enjoy it as much as possible.

“It has made a difference. We’d like to think that we’ve got a goal in us but you still need to practice. In games, we’ve been sharper and kept our calm in front of goal.”
