Ex-Gills striker dies at 81

Former Gillingham striker Tommy Johnston has died, aged 81.

Scottish-born Johnston saw out the twilight of his career at Priestfield, scoring 10 goals in 35 appearances between 1961 and 1962.

Johnstone, a traditional solid centre forward, signed from Leyton Orient for £2,000.

He was recently voted the greatest ever Orient player and the club has vowed to rename a stand in his honour.

Johnston was coming towards the end of his career when he arrived in Medway in September, 1961. He didn’t disappoint Gills fans, scoring on his debut.

The rugged Scotsman could easily be identified on the pitch by his strapped-up arm.

As a youngster he was involved in a mining accident when a coalface collapsed, leaving him with a broken leg and crushed arm.

He overcome the leg injury but played with his arm strapped for protection.

After his short spell at the Gills he moved to Folkestone as a player-coach.

He retired in 1964 to open a betting shop before emigrating to Australia.
