Ensure your car stays cool on holiday

AFTER the recent soaring temperatures, Nationwide Autocentre, the motor repair and servicing chain, is issuing a warning to holiday motorists to check their anti-freeze levels. It follows the alarming results of its summer car safety survey.

Jon Morgan, a manager with Nationwide, said: “Most people think that anti-freeze protects their engine in dipping temperatures, but in many vehicles it also serves as a summer coolant which helps prevent the engine from over heating.

“Out of the 250 people surveyed, only 16 per cent were aware of the importance of anti-freeze, but even more worrying is the fact that only 13 per cent would have levels checked before heading off on their summer holiday.”

He added: “This is particularly important right now given the heatwave. High temperatures and holiday traffic jams put car engines to the ultimate test. When cars are stationary, there is reduced air-flow to cool the engine so it’s imperative to check that the cooling system is in peak condition and that the anti-freeze/summer cooling levels are correct.

“If not, you could face a hefty bill to replace a head gasket if your engine over-heats. And you’ll also face ruining a holiday by sitting in traffic waiting for a recovery company to come to your aid. It only takes a few minutes to run the necessary checks before hitting the road.”

All Nationwide Autocentres offers a free 14-point holiday check which will identify any problem areas. There are 197 centres UK-wide.
