A LORRY driver escaped uninjured when his vehicle caught fire while he was travelling on a Kent motorway.

Two fire tenders were called to the London-bound carriageway of the M20 near Wrotham, just short of junction 3, the M26 turn-off.

The driver pulled onto the hard shoulder when the fire broke out at about 7.40pm on Tuesday and summoned help using an SOS phone.

The first lane of the motorway was closed while the fire was tackled but the flames were quickly extinguished. Kent Fire and Rescue Service said the passenger compartment of the lorry had been left with about 80 per cent damage.

Kent Police said no other vehicles were involved. The cause of the fire is unknown.
