Dozens of jobs set to be axed at manufacturing firm

The majority of workers at a Medway company have been told they face redundancy.

Employees at Mondi Rochester Ltd, in Commissioners Road,Strood, were told at the beginning of the week that 65 of the 84-strong workforce are set to lose their jobs.

The firm makes specialist coatings and laminators for various industries, including building and packaging.

Bosses say the jobs will be lost because it intends to move its operations to other plants in Europe.

On Monday staff turned up and were handed letters informing them of the pending redundancies.

A spokesman for Mondi, which has operations worldwide, said: “Mondi can confirm that it has entered into consultations with unions and employee representatives for a proposed move of its extrusion coatings business in Strood near Rochester to other Mondi plants in Europe."
