DETECTIVES investigating a fatal fire in Margate which claimed the lives of two men last weekend are appealing for sightings of a car seen in the town on the morning of the blaze.

The police are appealing for sightings of a small, dark coloured car - possibly a Vauxhall Corsa - with a sticker featuring the website address www.bodystyling4U.com across the rear windscreen.

The owner of this vehicle or anyone who saw it in Margate in the early hours of last Saturday are asked to contact the incident room at Margate police station on 01843 222219.

Meanwhile, floral tributes have been laid against the charred and boarded front door of the building in Grosvenor Place where the tragedy happened.

Two young men have been remanded in custody charged with murdering 18-year-old David Slater and James Mullins, also 18, whose bodies were found in a third floor flat.

James’s twin brother Michael is being treated for injuries at a specialist burns unit in East Grinstead in Sussex. His condition is still described as “serious”.

He was asleep in a front bedroom and although badly injured he is said to have jumped to safety from a window.

In the dock at Margate magistrates' court on Monday accused of murder were Daniel Parry, 20, of Approach Road, Margate, and a 17-year-old youth who cannot be named for legal reasons.

They were among five men arrested over the weekend. Three others have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

A post mortem examination has revealed that David Slater, who lived at Grosvenor Place, and James Mullins, of Palmer Crescent, Margate, had died from smoke inhalation.

The officer in charge of the case, Det Chief Inspector Dave Gutsell, said: “In a case where two people have died and another is seriously ill, the investigation will continue for a while.

“We need to speak to anyone who has any information at all about the build-up to this incident, and was in the area at about 2.15-2.30am on Saturday, July 26.”

In a direct appeal to any witnesses he said: “Even if you saw or heard something you think is insignificant, don’t assume someone else has told us. “Please contact the incident room on Thanet 222219.”
