A stolen digger was used in an attempted theft of cash machines from a bank.

The brightly-coloured digger, which was taken from Wrotham on Friday night, was used in a bid to remove two cash machines from the wall of NatWest bank at Larkfield, near Maidstone, shortly after 3am Saturday.

The digger was left at the scene after the attempt failed - but has since been recovered by police.

Police believe two other vehicles may have been involved, including a flat bed truck and a 4x4 vehicle. The truck has been removed from the scene and is being forensically examined.

The bank was structurally damaged in the incident and was cordoned off while it was assessed on safety grounds.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who saw the vehicles immediately prior to the incident – they believe they may have travelled in convoy to the scene.
