Delighted sports fan gets his wish to see the Games after tickets turnaround

A father has battled the odds after his dream of seeing the Olympics was put in jeopardy by a shock diagnosis.

Dad-of-one Wayne Weeks was overjoyed when London won its bid to host this year’s biggest sporting event - and was even more delighted when he secured tickets to athletics today.

But just three weeks ago he was diagnosed with suspected acute myeloid leukaemia, a form of blood cancer.

Doctors recommended the 33-year-old, of Clock House Rise, Coxheath, should only go to the capital with wife Shelley if he travels in a wheelchair.

To help make that happen, the KM Group called on organisers Locog to change the couple’s seats to include disabled access.

Mrs Weeks had failed to get a response from the ticketing team, but thankfully our appeal was successful.

Mr Weeks said: "I couldn’t believe it when Shelley told me. I'm so chuffed. I won't need painkillers on the day as I’ll just be running off adrenaline."

Mrs Weeks, 35, said: "I am so relived. He lives and breathes sport and this will give him something to look forward to."

He will have to be discharged from Maidstone Hospital for the day, where he is due to have chemotherapy. Mrs Weeks has visited her husband every day since he was taken ill on July 13.

They have been together for 10 years, married for two years and have a nine-month-old son, Olly.

Mr Weeks had complained of back pain, but further tests led to the diagnosis of leukaemia. The illness has weakened his bones and made walking extremely difficult.
