Memories of comic actor Sir Norman Wisdom - who died on Monday - will be recalled in the Deal area this week, as the 95-year-old was a regular visitor to the town.

He spent his childhood in Deal, worked as a delivery boy for a High Street shop when he left school and never forgot his roots, being associated with many local groups and organisations.

Julie Powell from Kingsdown said: "He was patron of the Whitecliffs Talking Newspaper for many years and really put our charity "on the map". We shall miss him so much and I’m sure all of Deal will be very sad to hear this news."

Sir Norman, who lived on the Isle of Man, was a regular visitor to Deal until about five years ago. He always found time to go to the talking newspaper studio, he was invited to open the Deal Hospital Fete and was a special guest at other Deal events.

The veteran entertainer made his name in musical theatre and from 1953 starred in a series of films. Oddly, he was famous in Albania where his old screen appearances attracted a huge following.
