A BY-ELECTION to elect a new MP for Bromley and Chislehurst has been set for Thursday, June 29.

The election was triggered by the death from cancer last month of Conservative MP Eric Forth.

Hoping to succeed him is Tory candidate Bob Neill, London Assembly member for Bexley and Bromley.

He has pledged not to stand at the next assembly election if elected but will not stand down from his seat to avoid yet another by-election in the borough.

Other candidates include Ben Abbotts (Lib Dem), Rachel Reeves (Labour), Nigel Farage (UKIP) and John Hemming-Clark (Independent).

Poll cards will be distributed to those eligible to vote and already listed on the electoral register from Monday, June 12.

A full list of candidates will be published at www.bromley.gov.uk on Thursday, June 15.

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on polling day.

Residents wishing to vote by post must ensure their application is received by 5pm, on Wednesday, June 14. Those wishing to vote by proxy have until 5pm, on Wednesday, June 21.

To apply for a postal or proxy vote, simply download, complete and return the relevant form on the website or call 020 8313 4364 to have one sent, then return it signed and in the pre-paid envelope supplied.

A spokeswoman for Bromley Council said: "We will do everything we can to ensure people with disabilities are able to vote, including providing large print ballot papers, wheelchair access and assistance at polling stations."
