Danny Jackman converted a second half free-kick to start Gillingham’s fightback against Bournemouth on Saturday and boss Andy Hessenthaler was left purring at his performance.

“He had a terrific game and was outstanding - he was brilliant,” said Hessenthaler.

“I like him in midfield. He is a creator and very comfortable on the ball. What he did in the first half was terrific and when you have the likes of him and Jack Payne who can play we have the right balance.”

Jackman, pictured, has made 135 appearances for the Gills in two spells, but started the season on the sidelines and it wasn’t until September that he made his first start. He is now becoming a key player for Hessenthaler.

“I have known Jacko for many years and I know he is a good footballer,” said the Gills boss.

“Deep down I wasn’t sure if he was in my plans (at the start of the season). I think he saw the midfield players we brought into the club and maybe thought he had gone down the pecking order but he has been absolutely first class in training.

"He is a good pro and a very comfortable footballer and I am delighted with him.”
