Cultural centre cash shock

Two major parts of the regeneration plan for Medway have been refused funds in the latest government spending plans for the Thames Gateway.

The proposal for cable cars to move people around the regenerated areas of the old Rochester City council has been vetoed.

But the biggest shock is the lack of funding for the cultural centre on the banks of the River Medway at Chatham Waterfront.

The plan for a combined art gallery, theatre and concert hall seating around 2,000 people was one of the cornerstones of the regeneration, and was seen as being a regional attraction.

Cllr Howard Doe insisted at the all-Conservative Cabinet that the cultural project was still very alive in Medway.
