Crops destroyed by field blaze

FOUR hectares of standing corn were decimated by fire on Tuesday.

Fire crews from Larkfield, Maidstone, Seal and Tenterden were called to Hale Farm, Pilgrim’s Way, Aylesford, at about 2pm.

The blaze was triggered by a grass-cutting tractor which hit a piece of flint and caused a spark, which then set grass alight, quickly spreading to an adjacent field of standing corn.

Firefighters remained at the scene for about an hour and a half, preventing it from spreading to a second field.

There were no reported injuries.
