A POPULAR 18th century courtesan who had men falling at her feet has failed to find a modern-day admirer.

The oil painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds of beauty Kitty Fisher did not find a buyer at Sotheby’s auction of old masters.

The portrait, being sold by the trustees of the Bowood Collection, had been expected to make up to £3million.

Known for her beauty, wit and horse riding skills, Reynolds' favourite model married and moved to Benenden, living in the house which is now Benenden School.

However, within four months she died, either of arsenic poisoning from the make-up she used but more likely from smallpox.

She is buried in the village churchyard wearing her favourite ball gown.
