A 99-year-old woman has died following a fire at her Kent home.

Firefighters managed to get her out of her burning cottage in Bexley High Street, but she did not regain consciousness.

The woman was taken to Queen Mary's Hospital at Sidcup with smoke inhalation but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Grade II-listed property was 50 per cent ablaze when firefighters were called at about 11pm on Wednesday.

Crews from Bexley and Erith spent 45 minutes bringing the fire under control. The blaze is thought to have started in the living room.

A post mortem on the victim is due to be carried out.
