Chris Palmer has denied that money is to blame for his decision to look at options away from Gillingham.

Palmer has yet to make his mind up about whether to accept Gillingham’s offer of a new contract.

The 27-year-old has been waiting to see if any serious offers emerge from clubs near his home in Derby but acknowledges that the time to make a decision is now.

He said: "I have enjoyed my time at Gillingham and I get on with the manager. The fans have been good to me and there is nothing that I can complain about.

"Everything has been fine but in an ideal world everybody wants to live closer to where they are from. Kent is three hours from where I am from and it makes it difficult for my family (Palmer has a partner and a young daughter).

"Trust me, it’s not about the money."

He added: "It’s a stressful time being away from home, especially when you have kids and you want them to go to school there.

"It’s completely not about the money. For me, it’s about making myself and my family comfortable in the surroundings where we are going to be."
