Reel Big Fish headline the final day of Folkestone Skabour Festival

Reel Big Fish frontman Aaron Barrett talks ahead of his band's headline set at Folkestone Skabour Festival. Chris Price posed the questions.

You guys made it big in the third wave of ska back in the mid-1990s. Folkestone Skabour festival has been hugely successful these past two years. Could a fourth ska wave be on the cards?

I don't know if there will be any more official or obvious "waves" of ska. The 3rd wave pretty much finally made ska a household word throughout most of the world and the scene has stayed strong since the late 1990s. A lot of people say that ska went away after the late 1990s but just because there isn't a ska hit song on the radio doesn't mean a scene or genre is dead at all. We've been constantly touring the world and playing the same or bigger venues we've always played in more and more countries every year. And there are so many good ska bands out there, and more ska fans than ever.

Can you believe it was 1997 when Sell Out made you guys the underground success story of the decade?
I don't know if we were the underground success story of the decade but having a hit song did help us get up to a new level which allowed us to get our music to more people. We still can't believe how successful we became then and have remained ever since. We are truly grateful for our fans support and for all that we have accomplished.

There have been lots of line up changes over the years. How has Reel Big Fish coped with that upheaval?

It's not a very nice answer but the truth is that this band has always been me, my songs and whoever I could get to play my songs with me. So members coming and going hasn't been such a huge deal as it may seem. And as old members have left for whatever reason they have been replaced with better musicians who were much more happy to be playing this music and doing what we do. But I always treat all the band members like family and everybody always gets a say in what we do, its not like I'm a control freak bossing everyone around. Anyway, I think the lineup we have now is absolutely the best group of musicians, performers and friends that Reel Big Fish has ever got together.

Is there anything you would change about your career?

There are always things that you would change when you look back on your life but we have had so many things go so amazingly well for this band that I wouldn't change anything at all.

Who is your favourite ever band and why?

Reel Big Fish...because it's my band!

Have you ever played in Folkestone or Kent before? What's your best memory of a UK gig?

Yes we have, we have done EXTENSIVE tours in the UK for the past 11 years and we have played just about everywhere! It's hard to pick a best memory because so many of our UK shows have been so incredible but I'd have to say headlining the Brixton Academy was pretty awesome!

What can fans expect when they come to see your show at Folkestone Quarterhouse?
