A man who threatened to jump off Rochester Bridge last night was eventually talked down by police.

The man was spotted on the bridge over the River Medway shortly before 9pm.

Emergency services, including the Medway Coastguard, Medway Police, the Sheerness RNLI inshore lifeboat and a RAF rescue helicopter, were sent to the scene.

The lifeboat crew remained under the bridge in case the man fell and the bridge was closed by police while they dealt with the incident.

After about an hour and a half, the man was persuaded to come down from the bridge and was taken into police custody.

A spokesman for the coastguard said: "We were stood down at about 10.30pm."

A police spokesman said the man was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital and the road was reopened at about 10.45pm.
