Boy in cliff tragedy named

A BOY of 16 who fell 80ft to his death from the clifftop above Port Ramsgate has been named as Mickey Griffiths.

The teenager was a student at Chatham House Grammar School, Ramsgate, and had just completed his GCSE exams. He was preparing to start a two-year sixth form course at Clarendon House Grammar in the town.

Chatham House head teacher John Mathews said: “The school held a memorial assembly for Mickey on Friday at which special prayers were said.

He was well known at the school and also at Thanet Wanderers Rugby Club where he played for the junior team. Our sympathies go to his family and friends."

On Saturday, the school’s first and second rugby teams observed a minute’s silence before their matches away to Maidstone Grammar School and the sides wore commemorative black armbands.

His body was found on the promenade by Port Ramsgate security staff on Sunday, August 31, at 5.30am. Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. An inquest will be held.

A funeral service will be held at St John’s parish church, Margate, at 2.15pm on Monday, September 15, followed by a private cremation. All friends are welcome at the church.
