The Mayor of London has denied reports the leading civil engineer considering plans for a huge airport off the north Kent coast is distancing himself from the project.

Doug Oakervee, who has drawn up a study for the Mayor about the possibility of an airport, was scheduled to appear at a meeting next week to be quizzed about the plans.

But Mr Oakervee, who was behind Hong Kong's international airport, has pulled out of the meeting of the GLA's environment committee meeting (March 11) citing business commitments.

A spokesman for the GLA said reports suggesting he was distancing himself from the scheme were wrong.

He said: "Unfortunately business commitments overseas mean Doug Oakervee is not able to meet the assembly next week. He remains a member of the steering group."

The scheme faced renewed criticism this week when the Board of Airline Representatives said Heathrow remained the best location for the UK's main airport and referred to Boris Island as a "transport cul-de-sac".

Among concerns raised by board, which represents 78 of the 90 airlines flying from the country, a higher chance of bird strikes due to large wildlife colonies in the estuary and costs.

Medway Council, Kent County Council and wildlife groups have all rejected the idea.

A delegation from Medway yesterday visited London in a bid to convince Mr Johnson his plans for the airport were 'pie in the sky'.
