Bogus 'cable guy' warning

A MAN posing as a TV engineer has been stealing digital set-top boxes from Virgin Media customers.

Police want to trace the bogus cable engineer who claims to be from Virgin Media and tells homeowners he needs to remove their set-top boxes to be repaired or replaced.

The conman even wears Virgin Media clothing to convince those he has targetted.

Residents across Bromley are being warned to be wary of anyone cold calling their property without advance warning from the company.

A police spokesman said: “It has affected a handful of people at the moment. But we’re concerned enough to warn people, especially Virgin Media customers.”

Police have also issued advice telling vulnerable residents to; always put the chain on the door before opening, ask for, and check, identification and if you are not totally convinced of their identity don’t let them in. If you are still worried dial 999 immediately and ask for the police.

A Virgin Media spokesman said: “We take it very seriously and our security team is working very closely with police. We encourage people to remain vigilant and to inform police of anything suspicious.”

Anyone with any information about this man should contact Bromley Police on 01689 891212 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
