The body of a former Medway pupil who died while serving in Afghanistan is being repatriated later today.

Captain Daniel Read, 31, who attended Rainham Mark Grammar School, was killed in Helmand Province on January 11 while trying to deacivate a Taliban bomb during his work for 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, Royal Logistic Corps.

He had previously been injured in an explosion in Afghanistan last October.

Former school friend, Medway councillor Andy Stamp, said: "The news of his death comes as a massive shock to all who knew him. He showed huge courage."

Mayor of Medway Cllr David Royle has sent a message of condolence to Rainham Mark school head Simon Decker on behalf of the council.

Mr Decker said: "From the tribute issued by the Ministry of Defence, Daniel served with great distinction, was very brave and saved many lives."

The bodies of two other British soldiers who also died in the war torn country are also being flown back home today.
