Blast sparks chemical factory blaze

AN EXPLOSION at a chemical factory in a Kent town rocked nearby houses today.

The blast was powerful enough to send shock waves through homes hundreds of yards away from the scene at Thor Chemicals, Chapel Hill, Margate.

It happened at around 10am and six fire crews from around Thanet managed to get it under control at 11.30am. Three crews have stayed at the scene to make it safe.

A 300m cordon was put in place around the area, but it has since been lifted.

Roads either side of the plant were closed but they have all now reopened.

Resident Sylvia Johnson, who lives at Ramsgate Road in the town, said: "The explosion was severe.

"It rocked the house, shook the windows and rattled ornaments."

Police have confirmed that there were no reported casualties. All staff at the factory have been accounted for.
