ICE skaters braved frozen flurries of snow as the festive season arrived early for residents of a Thanet village.

Idyllic scenes at the turning on of the Birchington lights would not have looked out of a place on a Christmas card and included carol singers, an ice rink and a lantern parade, while a snow machine added to the fun.

A large Christmas tree, covered in blue and white decorations, was the picturesque centrepiece of the celebrations. Shops sparkled as icicles hung from canopies and Dog Acre was transformed into a winter wonderland with twinkling lights.

The magical day was the work of a small team of local people, who rely heavily on donations from shoppers and councillors, as well as the parish and district authorities.

Pam Vitton, who runs the Best Wishes card shop and is a member of the organising committee, said: "It was absolutely brilliant; the atmosphere was wonderful and there was something for everyone. The day had a real 'village feel' to it and everyone seemed to be having a great time."

Fellow organiser Carol Adams, owner of the Priceless store, added: "Feedback from local people has been excellent. The Santa's Grotto was a big hit with the children and the skating rink was especially popular.

"We'd like to say a huge thank you to all the traders and residents who supported the event. Thanks also to Mark and Malcolm at MTH Electrical and all at Birchwood Kitchens for their generosity."

Carol and Pam both plan to work behind the scenes again next year, despite the many hours spent meticulously preparing for the festive extravaganza.
