Back to the future for Mote House

RETIREMENT developers Audley has released a 'first look' image of how Mote House in Maidstone will look after restoration.

Audley submitted a planning application for the renovation of Mote House to form the centrepiece of a premium retirement village, wherever possible maintaining and re-instating rooms to their original proportion.

The application details plans for the construction of 86 properties comprising a mix of one and two bedroom apartments in the main building as well as two and three bedroom cottages and houses in the grounds, designed for people aged 55 and over.

The artist’s impression sets out how the development will appear when the site opens in October, 2007.

David Wild, sales and marketing director for Audley, said: "Audley has a proven record for taking important listed buildings from across the UK and restoring them to their former grandeur.

"Mote House will form the centre of the development and include shared use rooms such as a restaurant, bistro and bar, library, while the Old Kitchens Building will house a health suite with swimming pool and sauna facilities."

He added: "We believe that with its stunning vistas, breathtaking scenery and premium accommodation, Mote House will prove to be extremely popular with those using the park and those wishing to live there."

Mote House was completed in the reign of King George III, and is a beautiful Portland stone house set commandingly between two gentle valleys, against a backdrop of majestic trees and woodlands. The park itself is a haven of wildlife and tranquillity, used by walkers, cyclists, the sailing club and cricketers.

The landscaping proposal includes reclaiming the area running east from the main house to the walled garden, known as the Shrubberies, from neglect and overgrowth and returning it to something approaching its earlier condition with flowering shrubs and pleasant walks.

The site includes 10.6 acres of land. Work is expected to start in October. The development will offer the best of both worlds, whether you’re looking for an active retirement, or something a little quieter.
