RECOGNITION: PC David Saunders with his Certificate of Merit

A NEIGHBOURHOOD police officer has won an award for attempting to save the life of a man who overdosed on drugs.

PC David Saunders received an area commander’s Certificate of Merit for his efforts while working as a patrol officer in Canterbury last February.

The beat bobby was on patrol when he was flagged down by a member of the public reporting that a man was taking drugs in a public toilet.

On arriving in the area, PC Saunders found the man to be unconscious and not breathing. Although no specialist equipment was available, the officer administered first aid in a bid to resuscitate the man.

He continued until ambulance staff arrived. The man, who had been taking drugs, did not recover and died in hospital.

Ambulance staff praised the action of PC Saunders and wrote to the Chief Constable, Mike Fuller, outlining the professionalism shown by the officer.

PC Saunders was awarded the certificate by Ch Supt Peter West at a special ceremony held at The Pavilion in Broadstairs.

Ch Supt West said: "His actions were both selfless and humane. He acted in the true spirit of the police service to try and save a life without regard for the difficult and unpleasant circumstances, or the potential risks to himself."

PC Saunders said: "I am sure that anyone, when presented with this circumstance, would act in the same way.

"I sincerely appreciate the recognition and I hope that this tragic event will act as a warning to others of the dangers of drugs."

PC Saunders recently joined the Central Neighbourhood team in Medway after working within Kent Police for the past six years.
