THIS is the face of a man who tried to rob a woman at knifepoint in Gillingham.

The attacker grabbed the victim from behind and threatened her with the knife as she was walking in Clifton Road on Wednesday, April 2. He tried to steal her handbag but was disturbed by a passer-by.

He ran off down Richmond Road towards the docks between 1.10pm and 1.20pm. The man is described as a white, 6ft tall and spoke with a southern accent. He was unshaven, wore a blue cap, black- hooded sweater and blue jeans. He was said to have "pungent" body odour.

A police spokesman said: "We are anxious to trace this man and would ask anyone who may have any information to contact us."

Meanwhile, police are also appealing for witnesses to a street robbery in Gillingham on April 2.

A member of the public was grabbed as they walked along East Street around 7.30pm and forced up against a fence by the mugger, who stole a number of personal items.

Now police officers are calling for anyone who may have been in the area at the time to get in contact.

PC Ross Worthington said: "Two witnesses were in the area at the time and may have seen the assault. We would ask them to come forward with any information they might have."
