The Archbishop of Canterbury says the failure of Irish Bishops to deal with paedophile priests is a "colossal trauma" for the Catholic church.

Dr Rowan Williams says officials in Ireland have lost all credibility because of the child abuse scandal.

The Vatican has also provoked controversy after the Pope's personal preacher compared criticism priests have received to anti-semitism.
