POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a 64-year-old woman died and another woman was injured following a road collision.

The incident occurred in the High Street in the St Lawrence area of Ramsgate on Friday afternoon.

At 5.30pm, a 7.5tonne Royal Mail lorry hit two parked cars, one of which was pushed on to the pavement striking two female pedestrians.

This car then struck another parked car pushing it across the road.

The woman fatally injured was from Ramsgate and her name has not yet been released by police.

She was with a 43-year-old woman who was taken to the QEQM hospital in Margate with a broken bone and head injuries. She has now been released from hospital.

The lorry ended up in the front garden of a house in the high street. The driver, a 57-year-old man from Canterbury, was not injured but he was arrested in connection with the initial collision and taken to Margate police station.

He has been released on bail while further investigations are carried out.

Officers particularly want to speak to anyone driving in the High Street area between the Budgen petrol station and St Lawrence Tavern who may have seen the Royal Mail van just prior to the colilsion.
