New Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler returned to work at Priestfield for the first time since being appointed on Tuesday.

The Gills boss had a day packed with meetings with players, as well as addressing the club's staff and also meeting the media.

"It's great to be back," said Hessenthaler. "It's a challenge I'm looking forward to.

"I've been back a few times in the last five years to watch games but to walk back in the office on Tuesday morning was very strange."

It represents the start of a busy period for Hessenthaler, who previously managed the club between 2000 and 2004, and will be assisted by Mark Robson, who was coach under the Mark Stimson regime.

"We'll be here most of the time now until the players come back on July 1," he added. "I'm excited and can't wait to get going.

"There's always expectations. People say you should never go back but I'm not worried about that.

"We're going to build a team that will give 100 per cent - nothing less - and wear the shirt with pride and passion. I've lived off passion in my career."
