A white horse, a tower of stacked cubes, and a steel "nest" are one step closer to dominating north Kent's skyline as the symbol of Ebbsfleet.

The selection panel for the Ebbsfleet Landmark project has selected the three proposals from Mark Wallinger, Daniel Buren and Richard Deacon respectively, for "further development".

The scheme, dubbed the Angel of the South, originally shortlisted proposals from five artists, but the panel has trimmed the numbers again and asked the remaining contenders to refine and explore the engineering and cost feasibility of their plans in more detail.

It is due to meet again in January to review their work.

Chairman of the Ebbsfleet Landmark Project, Stephen Jordan said: "With such an outstanding range of proposals, it’s right that we now look carefully at the practical delivery of each and explore further funding options.

"After all, this commission will not just be here for years but for generations to come. With over 40,000 people commenting on the proposals at the Bluewater exhibition, this has not only been a monumental consultation exercise but one that has proved extremely useful and constructive."
