Alleyway drug-dealing claims prompt action

People living in the St Margaret’s Bank area of Rochester have met with police and ward councillors to discuss problems with anti-social behaviour.

The meeting followed claims of drug-dealing in alleyways near to the High Street, Nags Head Lane, Hawkwood Close and Five Bells Lane.

There have also been complaints about people urinating and leaving human excrement in the same areas

Residents want alley gates installed and intend to hand a petition to Medway Council.

Ward councillor Cllr Bill Esterson (Lab), has said he is prepared to pay for the gates out of his ward funds.

One resident affected is Sylvia Meade, of Hawkwood Close, said:“The drug dealers turn up at all times, and now people urinating in the alleys.

“We think the problem is made worse because they know the area is not covered by CCTV cameras.”

Inspector Mat Newton who attended the meeting, added:“After doing this we will all work together to establish the most effective to tackle the anti-social behaviour being experienced.”
