Alert after theft of marine flares

POLICE investigating the theft of some marine flares from a fishing boat on Walmer beach are concerned somebody might get hurt if they are misused.

Six marine distress flares were taken after a cabin of a boat was broken into at some time between 9pm on Friday, March 31, and 1pm on Saturday, April 1.

The flares contain an explosive and can be much more powerful than a firework and are extremely dangerous if they are not handled correctly.

Anyone who finds a flare should not touch it, even if it looks spent, and inform the police immediately.

Police are also warning that it is an offence to discharge a marine flare unless it is a genuine emergency, or to discharge one from the land.
