AFC Sheppey are up and running in the Vandanel Kent County League after notching their first win in Division 1 East with a 2-0 success over Oakwood on Saturday.

Both goals came in the second half, scored by Luke Rowland and substitute Aaron Kelly, but Sheppey should have been ahead at half-time. Tyrone King missed a penalty when the Oakwood keeper made a great save and Rowland also wasted a couple of chances.

But Rowland made amends on the hour when he finished off a flowing move with a cracking 20-yard drive, and then Kelly made sure of the points when he cut inside to score with a shot into the far corner 10 minutes from time.

Sheerness East collected their first point of the season in Division 1 East with a 3-3 home draw against New Romney – but manager Dave Down wasn’t that happy.

He said: "We should have been leading by two or three goals at half-time, but we are making too many individual errors which are gifting people goals. Because of that, we have only got one point from our first two matches when we should have at least four."

Sheerness dominated the first half but only went in drawing 2-2 and although they went in front again midway through the second half, New Romney equalised minutes later. East’s scorers were Craig Holland, Matthew Longhurst and an own goal.

This Saturday, Sheerness are at home to Otford United.
