Luke Dean has made history as the first priest to be ordained at St Laurence Church in Ramsgate since it was built 946 years ago.

The 51-year-old former computer software engineer was a deacon serving the St Laurence parish but his new role means he can now conduct marriages and blessings among his duties.

The service, which was conducted by the Bishop of Dover Steven Venner, was attended by groups and organisations attached to the church. Youngsters from St Laurence School choir sang two songs, one dedicated to Rev Dean, while the church choir also performed.

Team rector Sharran Ireland said: “It was an historic occasion and there was a lot of affection shown for Luke and what he brings to our parish. It was a lovely morning rounded off with a celebration lunch for 128 guests including representatives from the other churches in our parish, St Christopher’s, St Mary’s and St Catherine’s.”
