More than 150,000 people have now joined a campaign to save the Garden of England and the rest of the British countryside from possible future development.

The National Trust launched its Planning for People campaign amid fears one of the biggest shake-ups of the planning system for decades could make it easier for developers to build on gardens and open spaces.

The government is adamant its National Planning Policy Framework is necessary in order to create jobs, revive the economy and make housing more affordable.

But the National Trust says the plans could be devastating for unprotected parts of the countryside.

Speaking after the 150,000th person signed the online petition, Hilary McGrady, National Trust Director for Kent, said: "This is very encouraging news and shows people feel very strongly about reform of the planning system and the threat that poses to our countryside.

"The government's proposals simply cannot be allowed to slip by unchallenged."

The National Trust is set to present its petition to the government on October 17 to coincide with the end of a public consultation on the planned reforms.
