Traders move back with sad stories

SHOPKEEPERS are preparing to move back into a Rainham, Kent, precinct after six months of work to correct subsidence. Some say they have lost thousands of pounds since they were forced to move out for the work in July.

They expect to be able to move back by November 25 but fear they may not have enough time to prepare for the Christmas period.

Graham Harrison, owner of The Bookmark, said he had lost a third of his trade.

"We are pleased that it will not be long now. It looks as if the work is progressing well. But it has set me right back. I have had to work hard to make two-thirds of what I was making this time last year."

Ten traders received letters to move from their shops to allow for work, which was due to last six months. Five of them fought an unsuccessful court battle with owners City Sites, who initially gave the shopkeepers just six weeks to move.

Barry's Fruitiers moved to another shop in Twydall, Gillingham, during the subsidence work but has lost some staff.

Sherridan Stock, owner of Rainham Health Food Centre, moved to Lordswood, Chatham, during the work. He said they had had just one customer a day during that time."We have already lost about £23,000 and this does not include loss of earnings," he said.

Queensbridge Management, part of landlords City Sites Estates, said the work was necessary and the shops would be back in the precinct by Christmas.
