Signs of an improvement in the housing market was underlined today by a 27 per cent half-year sales boost by housebuilder Persimmon.

In the six months to June 30, the parent company of Surrey-based Persimmon Homes South East legally completed 4,657 units, an increase of 16 per cent on the same period in 2009. Revenue went up to £776.6m, up 27 per cent.

Pre-tax profits of £101.4m including an exceptional credit of £63.6m, with underlying profit of £39.4m.

This compares to a loss of £16.7m in the same period in 2009.

The news follows a similar upbeat performance reported yesterday by Kent-based Bovis Homes Group.

Persimmon Homes South East has two developments in Ashford. Edward Owens, managing director, said: "We continue to show great success at both our Bridgefield and Repton Park sites.

"Ashford is a recognised growth area and has proved to provide a consistent marketplace to underpin our business."

He added: "The market has remained stable throughout the first half of the year, and given the ratio of homebuyers in the South East, we expect this trend to continue.

"Our ongoing detailed market research ensures that we have the appropriate housetype to meet the needs of our purchasers, both in terms of their personal requirements and budget.

"Following on from successful land acquisition in 2009, we have contracted the purchase of four new sites for a total of 168 units.

"Again, we have been highly critical in our choice of product and location, sourcing opportunities in towns and villages with little competition and ensuring that the type of housing offers efficiencies and is attractive to our target market."

John White, group chairman, said: "Overall, whilst we currently remain cautious, we are optimistic about the future of our business.

"We have a strong balance sheet, excellent cash generation, national coverage and an experienced management team."
