Marks and Spencer announces store closures

High street retailer Marks and Spencer has announced that it will close 67 stores in the next five years, leaving its Kent branches at risk.

The company announced that it would close 67 of its "lower productivity, full line stores", and will open 104 new Simply Food stores.

The closures will make up one in four of its bigger stores selling clothing and homeware. The firm told investors that it aims to have just 180 full-line shops by 2028, compared to its current 247.

The retailer has a large number of stores in Kent, including at Bluewater, Canterbury and Westwood Cross.

In January this year, the company's branch in Week Street, Maidstone, closed permanently.
